IELTS academic reading exercise

IELTS academic reading exerciseReading has always been challenging for many candidates specially those who require 7 in each module. They do many exercises with intention to test themselves but not develop skills which can help them boost their band score.

In real exam there are 40 questions which you have to answer from 3 long passages. It is not difficult if your reading speed is average and you have good sense of skimming and scanning. Examiners assess candidates skills whether they can identify main idea and supporting details  of certain paragraphs.

But candidates do not feel the need to familiarize themselves with what is discussed in the paragraph and what are the details. This is all because of not knowing basics of paragraph structuring.

Every paragraph has main idea and supporting details in shape of functions. For example, if the opening sentence discusses main idea, the second , third or further sentences will always give details like explanations, examples, results, contradictions, similarity, addition etc. So if one can identify main idea of a paragraph, it becomes easy to follow details.

With a wide variety of techniques, scientists are working to take a good look into the sea. Nicholas Makris and his fish-tracking research group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently unveiled a sensor that can observe 10,000 square kilometers at a time. Those systems gave only rough ideas of the size of huge fish clusters that swam this way and that. In a test off the coast of New Jersey, the new tool detected what may be the largest school of fish ever recorded in one image. It covered an area the size of Manhattan and included some 20 million fish.
