Five Steps to write IELTS task 2 Essay

It is pivotal to plan your task 2 essay in IELTS exam as it will help you perform better in it. Thinking same time what to write, how to write, formality, using adequate vocabulary, linking phrases, putting information in order becomes challenging.

While following procedures steps 1-5 will make your essay effective. This gives you chance to use your all potential in strategic way.

  2. Brainstorming ideas
  3. Planning ideas
  4. Writing ideas
  5. Proofreading

Step 1 – Analyzing the question

IELTS writing task 2 essay has two types;

  1. Solution essay
  2. Argument essay

It is important to analyze the question and find out which type it is (solution or argument)and see where the introduction and question in it is and number of  questions.

Television is now widespread in all communities. Almost everyone has access to this medium on a daily basis. However, the effects of television are not always positive.
What are some of the negative effects of television? what can be done to minimize these bad effects?

By analyzing above question we understand that it is asking to give solution. and it has two questions

  1. What are some of the negative effects of television?
  2. What can be done to minimize these bad effects?

Step 2 – Brainstorming ideas

In this step we make notes of ideas based on question. Lets brainstorm ideas for the question we have as a sample.

Negative effects of television

  • expensive for the community
  • destroys local customs
  • people waste time
  • bad influence of advertising
  • people become lazy
  • destroys family life
  • can be used for bad political purposes
  • bad for the eyes
  • spreads Western culture

Minimize bad effects

  • control TV content
  • control advertisement
  • explain effects to people
  • encourage alternative entertainment
  • limit broadcasting hours

Step 3 – Planning ideas

In planning step you need to plan which ideas to use and which to drop. Start planning ideas which you intend to use.

Paragraph – 1
general idea : Effects on individuals
supporting detail: people waste time people become lazy, bad influence of advertisement

Paragraph – 2
general idea :  Effects on family and society
supporting detail : destroys family life, destroys local customs, spreads western culture

Paragraph – 3
general idea : How to minimize
supporting detail :  control TV content, explain effects to people

Step 4 – Writing ideas

In this step you follow the plan

How to put general ideas in paragraphs
General idea is called main idea of a paragraph in other words i should say it carries main idea of a paragraph or tells reader what this paragraph is about. When it is put in a sentence that is called topic sentence which  is placed in a paragraph as a first sentence.

How to write supporting information in a paragraph
Sentences which have supporting information are called supporting sentences. They back up the topic sentence of a paragraph. The more supporting sentences you have with example, evidence, reason, result, reference etc the more effective your paragraph is going to be.

Step 5 – Proofreading

Proofreading means correcting your spelling , grammar, punctuation and etc after you finish writing your essay.
Make sure to allow some time to give you chance to proofread your essay to correct your mistakes.

    Technique and method for teaching how to develop an essay is precise and effective, of course with the help of a teacher. This shows the claims do match the achievements. However, I think Two+7= two + seven but 2 + 7 should be 9.
