OVERVIEW
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a multiple choice, computer-administered university entrance exam required by applicants of graduate studies at business schools around the world.The test intends to assess student’s critical thinking and analytical writing skills alongside mathematical reasoning and problem solving abilities.
This test is owned and administered by GMAC and it provides business schools with a common measure of applicant’s readiness for graduate level business studies. A higher GMAT score along with academic achievements and supporting materials guarantees admission in a reputable business institution.
GMAT test centers are available all around the world and test are taken every after 16 calendar days.
WHO ACCEPTS GMAT?
More than 7000 programs at almost 2000 universities and colleges globally require GMAT at the time of admission.
The test is a prerequisite for a wide range of graduate programs including MBA, Master of Accountancy and Master of Finance.
FORMAT
The test takes 3 ½ hours to complete and it is divided into four sections
- Analytical writing assessment
- Integrated reasoning
- Quantitative reasoning
- Verbal reasoning
All these four parts are arranged in following three different sequences and test takers have a choice to choose their favorite order for the test. A tutorial will play on the screen for the candidates to choose test order before the exam starts

WHAT IS MEANT BY COMPUTER ADAPTIVE TEST?
The quantitative and verbal reasoning sections of the test are computer adaptive, meaning difficulty level of the test tailors itself according to your ability level.
When a candidate starts the test, computer will display a question with medium difficulty level. Student’s answer to each question are marked and their responses to every proceeding question is recorded and helps computer to select the next question.
If the student attempt first question correctly the computer will usually select a harder question and if a question is attempted incorrectly the next question will be easier. This will continue until the test finishes.
Candidates will not be able to skip, return to or change their answers to a question because computer uses the response to each question to select the next one.
HOW IS THE GMAT SCORED?
Candidates are awarded with a separate score for all four sections and an overall score which is derived from the score of quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning.
The overall score ranges from 200-800 and is marked in intervals of 10. This score is based on the accuracy of candidates in verbal and quantitative reasoning sections as well as the difficulty level of the questions attempted correctly.
Analytical writing assessment is scored from a point scale of 0-6 and it is marked in intervals of 0.5. The essay in this section is first checked manually than it is checked using a programed computer. Only if both the scores match the score is finalized or else it is rechecked.
Integrated reasoning scores range from 0-8 and are reported in intervals of 1. This score is solely based on the number of correctly attempted questions.
Quantitative reasoning and Verbal reasoning scores range from 0-60. These scores are based on three factors:
- Number of question attempted
- Number of correct answers
- Difficulty level of the questions
RESULTS
Candidates will receive an unofficial score for each of the four sections immediately after the test. The official result transcript will be available within 3 weeks following the test day.
A candidate have the facility to retake the exam for a total of 8 times however each retake exam should be 16 days apart and no less. The results of the GMAT are valid for a period of five years.
